Tests and treatments

The treatment you’ll need depends on your cause of liver disease, and how advanced it is. For example, if you have a hepatitis virus, you’ll need medication to try and get rid of it (hepatitis C), or to help control it and keep in suppressed (hepatitis B).

Sometimes you will need medications to control the liver damage or prevent complications that are common in people who have liver disease. Sometimes you will need to be on lifelong medication to help keep your liver as healthy as possible.

You will need to see your doctor regularly. They may want to check that you don’t develop cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Some people with liver disease will need surgery or a liver transplant.

Your doctor will talk to you about managing any other health conditions you might have, like overweight, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes and refer you to other specialists if necessary.

You may need to see many different specialists to ensure that your whole body is as healthy as it can be and manage any other conditions that may be contributing to your liver problems.
