Liver Foundation welcomes new national hepatitis strategies

Liver Foundation welcomes the release of the National Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C Strategies 2026–2030, marking an important step forward in Australia’s response to viral hepatitis.

These strategies provide a clear and coordinated path to reduce the impact of hepatitis B and C, with a strong focus on earlier diagnosis, improved access to care, and better support for the most affected communities.

Viral hepatitis remains a significant contributor to liver cancer and liver-related illness in Australia. Strengthening prevention, increasing testing, and ensuring people can access timely treatment are critical to improving outcomes and reducing the long-term burden on individuals, families and the health system.

We are particularly encouraged by the emphasis on reaching underserved populations and supporting more accessible, community-based care. Addressing gaps in awareness, reducing stigma, and improving health equity will be essential to achieving national targets.

Liver Foundation looks forward to continuing to work alongside government, clinicians, and community partners to support implementation of these strategies and improve liver health outcomes for all Australians.
