Vale Professor Powell

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Lawrie Powell AC.

Prof Powell co-founded the Australian Liver Foundation (one of the precursors to the national Liver Foundation) with the Honourable Mike Ahern in 2001 and we are grateful for his vision that helped lead the Liver Foundation to where it is today.

Prof Powell made substantial contributions to the research of liver disease, particularly cirrhosis and hemochromatosis, including authoring over 400 publications.

He helped establish a comprehensive cancer research centre at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research which opened in September 2001 and was a Director there from 1990 until 2000.

In 2001, he was awarded the Centenary Medal for his service to the community through his role at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. Professor Powell received a gold medal from the Canadian Liver Foundation, was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in the 1990 Queen’s Birthday Honours in recognition of his service to medicine and medical research and was named as the University of Queensland’s Alumnus of the Year in 1999. He was named a Queensland Great in 2002.

He will be sorely missed.

Vale Professor Powell.
