Talk to an expert liver nurse: 1800 841 118

We are hiring: Registered Counsellor: Liver Cancer Tele-Support Service

Liver Foundation is excited to announce a new opportunity to join our team as we expand our support line for people with primary liver cancer.

This innovative nurse-led helpline is part of the Australian Cancer Nursing and Navigation Program (ACNNP), designed to ensure that all people affected by cancer, regardless of tumour type or stage, have access to the support they need. The helpline will provide culturally safe, judgment-free, expert advice and support for patients, their families, friends, and carers.

We are now recruiting for a Registered Counsellor. The position is advertised on Seek.com. We encourage you to share this opportunity widely to help us find the perfect candidate who can help us deliver this vital service to the community.

About the role
Liver Foundation is seeking an experienced, registered counsellor to join our tele-support team. Working with our Nurse Clinical Lead and other nursing and allied health colleagues you will provide evidence-based psychosocial and emotional support via phone, video, email and online support groups to people affected by primary liver cancer and advanced liver disease, including loved ones and carers.

People affected by liver cancer and liver disease frequently experience stigma and discrimination, both within the community and the healthcare system, which can impact their access to care or confidence in receiving safe, non-judgemental support. Liver cancer is frequently diagnosed at a late stage which limits curative treatment options, and the complications of advanced liver disease can significantly affect quality of life and psychosocial wellbeing for both the patient and their support network.

This is a unique opportunity for a skilled clinician to work remotely as part of a multidisciplinary, patient-centred and supportive team. This role will deliver person-centred, evidence-based support across a range of psychosocial and supportive care needs, enabling people affected by liver cancer and advanced liver disease to reduce distress, build coping strategies, and feel less isolated throughout their care journey.

What we offer you

  • The opportunity to join a truly patient-centric organisation to deliver an essential service using the latest evidence and patient and clinician consultation.
  • Support from the Nurse Clinical Lead, with regular team meetings, as well as monthly external clinical/professional supervision.
  • Ability to work remotely from anywhere in Australia
  • A competitive salary and PBI packaging benefits
  • A workplace where your insights, ideas and talents will be welcomed and supported.

Key Selection Criteria

We are looking for a registered counsellor who has had experience in talking to people with cancer and chronic disease. Experience in hepatology would be favourable but is not essential. This role is a unique opportunity to provide invaluable support and psychosocial care to people all over Australia with primary liver cancer and advanced liver disease.

  • Counselling or psychology tertiary qualification or equivalent
  • Current registration with a national peak body (e.g. ACA, AHPRA, PACFA)
  • Demonstrated significant post-qualification experience working as a counsellor in a cancer or chronic disease setting.
  • A trauma informed approach
  • Demonstrated experience providing individual and group counselling and support either online, by phone or face to face.
  • Knowledge of the health needs of people affected by cancer and chronic disease.
  • Ability to work autonomously and within a collaborative team environment, with proven time management and organisational skills
  • Experience in working with diverse groups, including but not limited to:
    • Those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including the use of interpreters
    • Rural and remote communities
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples
    • People living with addiction
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity
  • Demonstrated experience in data collection and management, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including written and verbal skills.
  • Must have access to reliable internet, as well as access to working, reliable laptop/computer and workstation setup.

Personal Attributes

  1. Commitment to the mission and values Liver Foundation.
  2. Positive and collaborative approach.
  3. Inclusive and supportive team player.
  4. Resilient and actively conscious of self-care, given the nature of the role and interactions with those affected by Primary Liver Cancer.

It is a requirement that all Liver Foundation tele-support employees have a valid and current National Police Check and a Working with Children’s check.

Liver Foundation values diversity and strives to ensure that each employee is able to be their authentic self. Liver cancer and liver disease disproportionately affect those from rural and remote areas, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. We actively welcome and encourage applicants from these and other diverse groups.
