Community outreach in action: building trust, access and liver health awareness with the HakhaChin community
Liver Foundation was privileged to recently deliver a liver health awareness session with the Hakha Chin community in Melbourne, Victoria, hosted by Women’s Health East at the Hakha Chin Baptist Church. The session was supported by Sui Cin Zah, a bicultural support worker with Women’s Health East, whose trusted relationships and deep understanding of the community helped create a welcoming space where women felt comfortable asking questions, sharing experiences and learning more about liver health.
Rather than delivering a formal presentation, Liver Foundation’s outreach team sat alongside community members to explore what they already knew about liver health, answer their questions and discuss the issues most relevant to their families. Together, they talked about hepatitis B and C, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, alcohol-related liver disease, liver cancer, testing, vaccination, treatment options and where to get help.
The conversation reinforced that liver health is shaped by much more than medical care alone. Factors such as language, health literacy, culture and trust in the healthcare system all influence how people access information and support. That’s why community-led health promotion is so important.
Community members also shared valuable feedback about how they prefer to receive health information. Many said written pamphlets are not always enough, with conversation, storytelling, video and trusted community networks often proving more effective. These insights help Liver Foundation continue to develop resources that are practical, culturally appropriate and accessible.
A special thank you to Sui Cin Zah for her leadership and care, to Women’s Health East for their ongoing commitment to community-led health promotion, and to Caroline, Liver Foundation’s Clinical Nurse Specialist, whose warmth and expertise helped make complex liver health information clear, practical and empowering.
This session strengthened our commitment to meeting communities where they are, in trusted spaces, with trusted people, and with health information that reflects real community needs.
