Consensus-Based Nursing Guidelines
Liver Foundation proudly supports the Australasian Hepatology Association (AHA) Consensus-Based Nursing Guidelines, a world-first initiative designed to support nurses in delivering high-quality, evidence-informed care to people affected by liver disease.
Originally published in 2012, these guidelines cover key areas including:
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Advanced liver disease
- Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
They were comprehensively reviewed in 2019 to reflect contemporary practice, with a focus on providing clear, practical guidance that can be readily implemented in clinical settings.
Current Review and Updates
In 2026, Liver Foundation has partnered with the AHA to support a further review and expansion of the guidelines. This includes the development of a new guideline addressing Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD).
Why These Guidelines Matter
These consensus-based guidelines:
- Provide practical, nurse-led guidance grounded in current evidence
- Support consistent, high-quality care across liver disease settings
- Highlight the critical role of nurses in prevention, management, and patient support
