Bruising

Bruises are red and purple marks under the skin. They are usually caused when the blood vessels are damaged, for example, if you knock yourself.

People with liver disease tend to bruise more easily. If you have a lot of bruises, it could be a sign that you have liver disease.

Why you get bruising

If you have liver disease, your liver doesn’t produce enough of the type of protein your body needs to clot the blood.

Bruising might also be caused by some of the medicines you are taking.

Tips for managing bruising

If a bruise is bothering you, use an ice pack or a packet of frozen peas wrapped in a dishcloth. Hold it over the bruise for 20 minutes.

When to see your doctor

Bruising isn’t normally serious. But mention it to your doctor if you are noticing more bruises than normal.
